CNN —The legal battle over a controversial Texas immigration law could eventually give the Supreme Court a chance to revisit a historic ruling that largely struck down Arizona’s “show me your papers” law and reaffirmed the federal government’s “broad, undoubted power” over immigration. “It would have been incredibly difficult for the 5th Circuit to let this law stand under existing Supreme Court precedent,” she said. ‘Show me your papers’ lawThe Arizona law is a high-profile example of what happens when states attempt to take immigration policy into their own hands. Jan Brewer signed the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, known as SB 1070, into law in 2010. The Supreme Court upheld the “show me your papers” part of the law and struck down the three other parts.

When income investor Jenny Harrington looks for top dividend stocks, names like Whirlpool come to mind. The home appliance manufacturer not only has a 6% dividend yield, but it has also gotten very cheap, Harrington said. She buys names that have a "reasonably high dividend yield" for her portfolio, which typically generates a 5% dividend yield or better. "We specifically focus on dividend income rather than dividend growth, because the objective of our portfolio is to generate a strong and sustainable income stream for our clients," Harrington said. Why Illegal Border Crossings Are at Sustained Highs

Why Illegal Border Crossings Are at Sustained HighsFor the second year in a row, the number of illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border surpassed two million, according to government data released this month. The 2022 fiscal year set a record of 2.2 million illegal border crossings. Shifting U.S. policies, global migration patterns and changing migrant demographics all factor into the high levels of illegal border crossings of the past few years. Since then, the number of illegal border crossings has increased every month, and border patrol agents made nearly 220,000 apprehensions in September alone. They accounted for the third-most illegal border crossings in the past year, after Mexicans and Guatemalans.
